It’s Burnout Season: Breaking the Cycle with TCM & Mindfulness
Are you wanting to break free of the cycle of burnout? This blog post is here for you as a map to restore balance, drawing on the wisdom of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and the practice of mindfulness.
The Element of Fire in TCM
In TCM, summer is associated with the element of fire. This element is linked to the heart and small intestine, and it governs our spirit and emotional well-being. While fire brings warmth, energy, and passion, too much fire can lead to burnout, manifesting as anxiety, restlessness, and physical exhaustion. Achieving a balanced state means maintaining a harmonious flow of energy, or Qi, within the body.
Achieving Balance
A balanced state in TCM would look like a calm, steady flame—providing warmth and light without burning out of control. This balance can be achieved through various practices and lifestyle adjustments that help regulate the fire element and support overall well-being.
6 Practices to Find Harmony
Here are some things you can try to find harmony and break the cycle of burnout:
Mindful Breathing: Incorporate mindful breathing exercises into your daily routine. This can help calm the mind, reduce stress, and regulate your energy levels.
Try THIS MINDFUL BREATHING PRACTICECooling Foods: Adjust your diet to include more cooling foods such as cucumbers, watermelon, and leafy greens. These foods help balance the heat of the fire element and keep your body hydrated and nourished. Think about all the incredible, hydrating foods that come into season over summer.
Acupuncture: If you know me, I am obsessed with Acupuncture. Your practitioner can provide focused acupuncture treatments that target the specific symptoms and underlying causes of burnout e.g. cortisol spikes, iron deficiency.
Herbal Teas: Drink herbal teas that have cooling and calming properties. Chrysanthemum tea, for example, is known for its ability to clear heat and calm the mind.
Movement: My personal opinion? Limit your hot yoga classes over summer and prioritise in more gentle physical activities. You can of course continue what makes you feel great, buts spend some more time with practices such as Yin Yoga, Stretching, Slow walks to aid recovery.
Adequate Rest: Ensure you get enough rest and sleep. The body needs time to recover and rejuvenate, especially during the high-energy summer months.
By integrating these practices into your daily life, you can help manage the fire element within you, reduce the risk of burnout, and maintain a state of balance and well-being. Remember, the key is to listen to your body and mind, and make adjustments as needed to support your health and happiness
